- QUEER KIDS
8.31.12 – 9.30.12
Opening Reception: Friday August, 31st, 6-8pm
Perpignan, France: July 18, 2012— Galerie de la Main de Fer is pleased to announce QUEER KIDS by M. Sharkey, a solo exhibition of works produced over the past six years documenting gay youth in the United States. QUEER KIDS will be on view August 31 – September 30, 2012 (coinciding with the Visa pour l’Image photo festival). An opening reception will be held on Friday, August 31 from 6 – 8pm.
Sharkey’s photographs are intimate testaments to his subjects’ powerful self-awareness; at once empathetic and opulent, they are the visual counterpart to the voice these young people have struggled—and lately succeeded—to find. Rooted in the long tradition of portraiture reaching back through influences as varied as Velázquez and Avedon, Sharkey’s images grant his subjects a full measure of the dignity with which they deserve to be seen. “I think I’ll always be drawn to this amazingly brave group. Their strength is a continual source of inspiration for me” says Sharkey. “It is their defiance that I want to capture in the portraits. What I hope people might also see is the delight that is the domain of a new generation: the sheer joy of being able to stand up and be seen without shame.”

- It's been more than a year since I had my first meeting with ROOKIE creative director, Anaheed Alani to discuss this story on teenage gender and sexuality. Anaheed knew how powerful a piece this was going to be, she just needed to find the perfect time to run it.I shot it last month and the day has finally arrived... it's live: Me and You and Everyone We Know

Georgina Chapman at Marchesa
I had the unique pleasure of photographing the gorgeous Georgina Chapman (of Marchesa fame) recently and I can tell you she's as charming as she is beautiful. Don't miss the great behind-the-scenes video (at left) from the very talented, Peter Crosby. Also, check-out some sexy/silly/fun images for a new shoe line called Adorn. I, for one, ALWAYS bathe with my heels on.

12 QuestionsAn excerpt from a recent interview with yours truly by the great blog-a-zine, 12 Questions:Q: With what fictional character do you most identify?A: One of my favorite movies of all time is “Harold & Maud” and I totally get Harold (played by Bud Court). In fact, his Jaguar E-Type-cum-hearse was the most coveted material thing I could imagine acquiring for many, many years.Click here to read full interview: 12 Questions

Claire DanesWhen "My So Called Life" first aired I was utterly smitten... by edgy good girl, Angela; bad boy, Jordan; and the first openly gay teenager on a television series I had ever seen, Rickie. My friends and I gathered together every week to watch all 19 episodes and then talked endlessly about our predictions for the next installment. If Claire Danes had never acted again she would still have gone down in history as playing the great lead on one of my favorite shows of all time. Strangely, she still has yet to out-do her star making debut but her new series, "Homeland" has been getting lots of good press. Also, this image is barley touched... she really is this pretty. Some girls have all the luck!
